First I must say that this movie is a must see on the big screen for the 3D graphics. Some things in it are very predictable, story line is decent, and it’s on par for most of what comes out of Hollywood.
The theater was packed. Some of the comments people were saying after the movie stunk of ignorance and stupidity. The lady on my left looked like she must have been a hippy in the 60’s. she told her friends how happy she was that the Na’vi were able to defeat the army and that war is wrong. She then ask when were people going to learn that war is never the answer. At this point I wanted so badly to point out the obvious, that war was the answer for the Na’vi. War was the answer for the Jews & the world during World War II. War is needed when an unjust aggressor will not be diplomatic. I would have said these things if I thought it wouldn’t have fallen on deaf ears. She had to be twice my age and I highly doubt she would have taken anything I said seriously.
I have heard some people compare Avatar to the pilgrims when they discovered the new world. In Avatar, the corporation with the mercenaries plans to bulldoze the Na’vi’s home if they go diplomatically or not because of the rich minerals. The corporation was the unjust aggressor and is not a fair comparison to the 1500’s here in the USA. The key here is that many Native American tribes did move on freely and some even sold the land. I am sure there were times where greedy uneducated people removed Native Americans from the land wrongfully, and that was almost 500 years ago, what’s done is done. Those who want to blame the current conditions of some of the Native American reservations, that are horrible, need to realize this is not our fault. I haven’t studied them much, and from what I see, it seems like it’s the tribal leaders that are getting rich from the casinos and off the hardships of their people. I have met Native Americans that have taken advantage of the American Way and are doing great.
Bottom line, good movie, not as lefty pinko as some blogs would have you believe, there was at least one line that could be a dig at Bush, and it has no ground for those who have common sense. Maybe James Cameron was not comparing the Na’vi to the Native Americans, and so what if he was, I’m sure that the comparison is right in some instances. Let us not forget that it was before the US Constitution was forged that the Native Americans gave up their land either freely, by purchase, or in some cases by force. Only ignorance would blame America for something that happened before America was founded.
